Patrick Woods -- Harnessmaker

I also wondered about the Patrick Woods listed two dwellings away from Lawrence Kerrigan in 1870.   [1]

In this census Patrick is a 30-year-old harnessmaker from Ireland, enumerated with 2-year-old Hugh Woods – who kept house (chuckle).

This is probably a good give-away that someone else really did keep house and was, for whatever reason, not listed by name.

What’s interesting is that both Lawrence Kerrigan and Patrick Woods appear to be living on Spruce Street (at this time) in Ward 2.  [2]

But by 1872, it appears they had each moved to Chestnut Street:  “Larey Carrigan” at 21 Chestnut and Patrick Woods at 25 Chestnut.  [3]

This might indicate some kind of connection between the two -- or perhaps not.

The other interesting thing is that Patrick, Sarah, and “Hewitt” were enumerated in 1880 at 15 Howard Street –where a Michael J. Higgins and wife Mary were also enumerated, but I don’t know if Michael is related to my Higgins or not. I lose him and his wife after 1880, even though this census gives a clue to his wife’s maiden name.  [4]

Kate Corrigan's Maiden Name

I wanted to know the maiden name of Kate Corrigan, the widow of Bernard.

I found what appears to be the Find a Grave memorial for their daughter Rose.  A copied inscription reads:  “Dau Bernard & Catherine Daly Corrigan.” [1]

It is unclear whether this inscription is from the headstone or from the Hartford Courant, but it gives me an idea of Kate’s maiden name.  I can’t be sure, though, until I look at the headstone and the obit, and until I find other supporting records.

“Daly” (derived from Ó Dálaigh) is not what I wanted to find.  I had hoped to find some record that stated Kate’s maiden name was Murphy – but I haven’t.

The only other person I’ve run across lately with a similar surname (“Daily” --also derived from Ó Dálaigh), is Bridget (Daily) Buckley.  She was likely the mother of “Jeremiah Buckley.”  [2]

Jeremiah had a tea and coffee business with Charles J. Reardon, which likely began in the mid-1880s. [3]

Charles was likely the son of Eliza Reardon – who headed the house where Lawrence Kerrigan was enumerated in 1870. [4]

But the Buckleys were likely natives of County Cork (not Westmeath) – according to a photograph of one headstone – which gives Bridget’s maiden name as “Daily.”  [5]

Peter Woods: Born in County Westmeath

The nieces and nephews of Margaret (Woods) Delaney can likely be found ten years earlier -- in the 1870 U. S. census – under the family number of Peter Woods, 55 years old and born in Ireland.   That would place his birth somewhere around 1815.  [1]

Because these were nieces and nephews, it is likely that Peter was the brother of Margaret (Woods) Delaney, even though he appears to be much older.

Peter likely died in September 1876 and his headstone places his birth in none other than County Westmeath.  [2]

If that is accurate, Margaret (Woods) Delaney may have been born there too.

So why was “Kate Cargin” [or Catherine Carrigan/Corrigan – also likely from County Westmeath] listed under the same family number as Dennis Delaney and wife Margret in 1880?  [3]

Did Kate have some tie to either Dennis or Margaret and did any of these people have ties to Lawrence Carrigan and/or Mary Murphy – who just happened to marry on the same day as Dennis and Margaret?

Dennis Delaney and Margaret Woods

My last post mentioned the marriage of Dennis Delaney (age 45) to Margaret Woods (age 25) on 17 October 1870 – on the same day Lawrence Carrigan married Mary Murphy.  Both couples were married by the same priest – who officiated at St. Patrick’s Church in Hartford. [1]

I found likely candidates for Dennis and Margaret in the 1880 U. S. census, residing with “Kate Cargin" – likely Mrs. Bernard Carrigan/Corrigan listed in city directories] but I needed evidence that this Dennis and “Margret” were the couple who married in 1870.  [2]

A) Let’s take Dennis first.  A candidate for Dennis pops up in the 1870 U. S. census.  There is no adult female listed at this family number, suggesting Dennis’ availability for the October marriage. The 7-year-old John listed here makes a good candidate for the 17-year-old John listed as Dennis’ son in the 1880 census, ten years later. [3]

·         Delaney Dennis, 43, laborer, b. Ireland
·         --Alice, 13, house keeper, b. Connecticut
·         --Delia, 9, b. Connecticut
·         --John, 7, b. Connecticut

B) According to Find a Grave, one Margaret Woods Delaney died 9 August 1896 in Hartford and is buried at St. Patrick’s Cemetery (no photograph of headstone). [4]

C) Hartford Probate Court records filed 13 August 1896 state that a Margaret Delaney died 9 August 1896 “possessed of goods and estate remaining to be administered, leaving a [unknown hand-written word], whose name is Dennis Delaney who has since deceased [all hand-written].”  The record goes on to list four individuals (listed below) with the surname “Woods” and their relationships to Margaret.  They all lived in Hartford at the time. [5]

Patrick F. Woods, a nephew
James Woods, a nephew
Mary C. Woods, a niece
Lizzie Woods, a niece

D) All four of Margaret’s nieces and nephews likely appear residing at 49 Front Street (mentioned in my previous post) in the 1880 Census – with their Mother Margret Woods – just three family numbers below Dennis Delaney and wife Margret, who just happen to reside with "Kate Cargin." [6]

E) I have not found Dennis or Margret in the 1900 census.

So, at this point it appears that the maiden name of “Margret” Delaney in the 1880 census record is indeed Woods, making her a good match for the Margaret Woods who married in 1870, even though her age differs from that record by ten years.

The question still remains:  Why are Dennis and Margaret Delaney living with Kate Carrigan/Corrigan in 1880?

Lawrence Carrigan: Another Connection to County Westmeath?

The following is either all just coincidence or Lawrence Carrigan has some tie to County Westmeath – although he was likely born in County Waterford.

While reviewing data I’ve collected on Lawrence Carrigan and his wife Mary (Murphy) Carrigan, something caught my attention.

Another couple had married on the same day by the same priest and were listed just below Lawrence and Mary on the registration page:

Dennis Delaney, age 45 from Ireland, and Margaret Woods, age 25 from Ireland, married 17 October 1870.  [1]

I wondered if Dennis and Margaret were associated with Lawrence and Mary somehow.

Fast forward 10 years to the 1880 U. S. federal census.

Dennis Delaney (about 45 years old) and wife Margret (about 45) are enumerated at 51 Front Street with a son named John Delaney, listed as 17 years old – which would place his birth somewhere around 1863 – before the marriage mentioned above.  [2]

Their ages on the census record disagree with the ages on the marriage record, and one wouldn’t expect this particular couple to have a 17-year-old son.  One possibility is that John was born out of a previous relationship.  [3]

But hold these conflicts aside for now because what further caught my attention was who else was enumerated at 51 Front Street in 1880 and at 49 Front Street:

51 Front:  “Cargin Kate”, a white female about 60 years old, born in Ireland, along with two daughters:  Kattie (23) and Roseanan (25).  [4]

49 Front:  “Woods Margret,” 47 with two daughters and two sons, along with a few boarders including James Woods, 25.  [5]

A quick check of Hartford city directories revealed a “Mrs. Bernard Corrigan” in 1880 listed at 51 Front (suggesting Bernard had died by then) and a Bernard Corrigan from 1875-1879.  [6]

Now switch back to 1870.  One likely candidate for Bernard pops up in the 1870 census and it is likely that Kate Cargin is the 55-year-old Catherine enumerated with Bernard:

Carrigan Bernard, 80, laborer, born Westmead Ireland
Carrigan Catherine, 55, keeping house, born Westmead Ireland
Rose Ann, 18, born Westmead Ireland
Catherine, 15, born Westmead Ireland [7]

[3] One Dennis Delaney (age 43) is listed in the 1870 census in Ward 5 of Hartford with only three children:   Alice (13), Delia (9), and John (7).  The absence of an adult female suggests their mother may have died.  See 1870 U. Welch 6: Possibilities

There are three other individuals I am tracking whose surnames were Welch/Walsh.  It is unknown whether or not they were relatives of the Welches who were associated with the Higgins family:
  • Patrick Welch:  a shoemaker of Rockland, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, born about 1840 in Ireland.   He had the same parental information as Edward’s wife Mary (Walsh) Walsh:   Thomas Walsh and Alice Gibbons [1].  His residence had been Abington in Plymouth County when he married Alice Landers of Boston in Boston in 1870 [2]. Abington had supplied the Union Army with footwear during the Civil War, and had been a center for the Abolitionist movement [3].
  • Michael Welch:  a foreman of Boston, born about 1839 in Ireland.  He lived close to James Higgins the roofer and also had parental information similar to Edward Welch [4].
  • Thomas Welch:  born about 1848 in Ireland.  He appears to also have had similar parental information as Edward Welch [5].

Welch 5: Parental Information

I wanted to take a deeper look at a few individuals whose surnames were Welch/Walsh (See A Common Denominator), meaning I wanted to compare their parental information, including Mary, the wife of Edward, whose maiden name now appears to be Walsh, and determine whether or not any of them were from County Waterford [1]:

So far the records I have suggest the following parental information:

  • Hannah (Walsh) Higgins:  John and Joanna [2]
  • Catharine (Welch) Lonagan:  Michael and Catharine [3]
  • Edward Welch:  Thomas and Mary [4]
  • Mary (Walsh) Walsh:  Thomas and Alice Gibbons [5]
  • Michael Welch:  Unknown and Unknown [6]

No two people in the list above have fathers and mothers with the same given names, and at this point it is unknown for certain whether these parents immigrated to the U. S., although I suspect that at least Edward’s mother did immigrate.

Because Edward’s wife Mary’s maiden name was Walsh, their relationship may suggest a link between their families, although at this point it is premature to say they were cousins.

And not enough is known about Michael Welch to place him in a time and place other than in Hartford, Hartford, CT in 1870 [7].

I am keeping a “possibility file” for a few other individuals whose surnames were Welch/Walsh, and I will post something about them next time.
