James Scanlan (possible brother to Cornelius Scanlon) married
Ellen Coughlan 6 August 1861 in Boston [1].
They likely had four known children:
Annie,
born 9 July 1862 in Boston [2]
John,
born 17 June 1864 in Boston [3]
Ellen,
born 2 December 1866 in Boston [4]
Jeremiah,
born 28 April 1869 in Boston [5]
James
appears as head of household at 92 Dresser Street on the 1900 U. S. census,
which states he was born in Ireland in September 1839, that he immigrated in
1859, and that he was a naturalized citizen [6].
Therefore,
he was likely naturalized on 10 October 1876 in Boston at the U. S. Circuit
Court, based on naturalization location, immigration year, and recorded birth of September 1838 on naturalization documents [7].
The corresponding naturalization documents state he was [drumroll!] born in County WATERFORD,
that he arrived at New York on 12 May 1859.
His witnesses were “Wm O’Brien” and “James Crowley” [8].
I’ve
got to find the right passenger list now – and hopefully James wasn’t traveling
by himself. I so want him to be
traveling with Cornelius! Or even a
Higgins or two...
