This John was born in the 1840s in Ireland and immigrated
about 1872-73.
He had a wife named Catherine, but not much else is known
about him, except that he too was a naturalized citizen.
It’s plausible he and Cornelius were related.
I looked at a digitized map of Township 26 in Lawrence County,
Missouri, from an atlas that was originally published in 1879.
These were the names of land owners I found
in section 6. Most of the land was owned
by “StL & SFRy” – which owned the middle of the section -- and with a little searching turned out to be the “St.
Louis and San Francisco Railway”:
J. Scanlon, 80 [acres]
T. Fox, 80
C. Scanlon, 80
Jno Johnson, 40
St. L & SFRy, 180
J. Ayers, 40
Jno P. Johnson, 40 [2]
That’s only 620 acres, not a complete section – but I’m more
intrigued with these questions:
1. Who did Cornelius buy his acreage from?
3. What was his relation to John Scanlon?
