The John Higgins on Dove St. (Ward 12, South Boston) in 1863
and 1864 tax records may or may not be the roofer listed at Farrell Place from
1859-1862 (See previous post).
A few years later, the 1870 Boston Directory DOES list a
John Higgins at Dove St., a laborer, on the corner near Nash Ct.
The same directory lists several of John the roofer’s
neighbors from the 1870 census as having houses on First Street, so there still
is a chance we are talking about two different individuals, the John at Farrell
Place and the John on Dove [1].
But for now, the John Higgins on Dove could have come from
anywhere, and it’s time to return to James Scanlan.
James married Ellen Coughlan 6 Aug 1861 [2].
They were married in Boston by one T. H. Bannon (likely
Thomas H. Bannon, a Catholic priest and native of Boston, ordained in 1858) [3]
The church is unknown, and city directories
were no help. The location of the church
may matter as well as its name so today I will send a letter to the Archdiocese
of Boston in hopes of not only discovering which church they were married in, but also the names of
witnesses at the wedding.
